URGENT ACTION JUNE 3rd TO STOP THE NAVY SHIP YARD COVER UP!

URGENT ACTION JUNE 3rd
FYI time change 12pm-9pm

DEFEND BAYVIEW
HUNTERS POINT FAMILIES
STOP THE TOXIC COVER UP

On June 3rd, Lennar’s Environmental Impact Report (EIR) will come before the Planning Commission for a vote on the release of construction permits. The dirty developer Lennar is being offered a sweetheart deal by the city government that will allow them to receive an early transfer of the shipyard from the Navy and to ‘cover up’ the toxic waste by starting construction before fully cleaning this toxic Superfund site. The development of the 770 acre Hunters Point Navy Ship Yard by Lennar will not only put the health of all San Franciscans at risk; it will also drive up property values in the Bayview neighborhood and continue to force working families and youth out of their community and the city.

Tell the SF Planning & Redevelopment Commissions to REJECT Lennar’s Plan to Cover-up the Toxic Shipyard! We are calling on our community of allies and supporters to mobilize to a high-stakes public hearing at City Hall that will heavily impact the future of our city.

We demand a full clean up of the toxic Hunters Point Shipyard. We demand the development of a progressive plan for the Shipyard and Candlestick Point that will meet the urgent needs of Bayview families, youth and workers for a healthy, safe environment, quality jobs, community services and affordable housing.

Join POWER, Green Action, SLAM, Soul’d Out Ministries, the All African People’s Church of St. John Coltrane and hundreds of Bayview families on:
Thursday June 3rd
6pm - 3am
City Hall – Main Chambers, room 250
*Their may be a change of time or day.

We will provide key talking points for the public on the environmental issues at stake in this decision. POWER leaders are also available to do a brief presentation about the Clean-Up not Cover-Up campaign, or to lead toxic tours of the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard.

Board of Supervisors Resolution Demanding Lennar Apology Aproved

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed a resolution on April 20,

2010 demanding that the Lennar Corp. issue a formal apology to the SLAM (Stop Lennar Action Movement) Coalition for sending an armed guard to a community forum that took place on February 20th at the Nation of Islam Community Center and Mosque in the Bayview. The Lennar Corp. is behind a massive luxury housing development plan on toxic land in the Bayview. The community was outraged by this unlawful act of aggression against a peaceful forum attended by community leaders, children, women, elders and representatives of the Environmental Protection Agency. POWER and the SLAM Coalition called for a public apology from the Lennar Corp. and Supervisor Daly introduced the resolution to the Board of Supervisors for a vote.

POWER and the SLAM Coalition sent a clear message to Lennar: intimidation tactics will not make us back down from our fight for a healthy, safe community! We continue to organize Bayview families and youth to convince the Planning Commission and the Board of Supervisors to reject Lennar’s Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for its development plan. Lennar wants to avoid a thorough clean up of the Hunters Point Shipyard by covering up the radioactive and toxic contamination buried in the land. We need our community and allies to help stop the cover up! POWER will be mobilizing hundreds of Bayview residents to demand a full clean up at a Planning Commission hearing coming up on June 3rd.

Lennar's Hired Gun

The most recent Lennar incident with the Bayview Hunters Point development project, occurred in late February.
There has been a lot of press put out there about the incident.
Many of us were at the meeting.

In all of the subsequent press articles, only one piece has boldly stated the truth about what occurred that night, quelled the rumors, and contextualized the Lennar corporation's irresponsible act by giving voice to the community members who were actually at the meeting.

Bayview Hunters Point Naval Shipyard Parcel G Clean Up

I went to a meeting coordinated by the India Basin Neighborhood Association where a specialist from SWAPE came to discuss the Design Basis Report for the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard clean up of Parcel G.

A little history for Parcel G-
The Navy approved the Record of Decision, the official document approving the clean up alternatives proposed by the EPA for Superfund sites, in early 2009.

Members of SLAM and Power were also in attendance. The specialist recently released the comments from the attendees.

A SUMMARY OF OUR COMMENTS ARE BELOW:
The DEIR emphasized Parcel G's primary use for a sports stadium.
However, residential use is also considered as a potential. But, the estimated human health risks have only been made on the basis for industrial and recreational use NOT residential.

The Community DEMANDS that a supplemental assessment for human health risks for a residential scenario be added to a REVISED Record of Decision.

The proposed clean up alternative is an asphalt CAP over the contaminated soil. The community is concerned about the maintenance of the CAP particularly because of "early transfer" and the potential changes in land use. We are also concerned about how the cap will protect the health of the potential occupants over the long term.

We know that the soil will be removed from the Parcel. We want the stockpiles of the soil to be sampled for potentially hazardous toxins before it is wheeled away through the community, generating harmful dust. We prefer the use of rail or barges to transport the excavated stockpile materials from the Parcel.

IN THE FUTURE:
We prefer the consideration of alternative transport for moving contaminated material, in future remedial activities. These alternatives should include barge and rail.

We prefer alternatives to the use of an asphalt cover be considered for the remaining parcels.

We prefer that all decision documents include the cumulative risks from all routes of exposure to contaminants, so as to fully understand the total health risks to human health on all of the sites.

Proposition F breaks Lennar's Bank

In the summer of 2008, there were two propositions on the ballot regarding the clean up of the Hunters Point Navy Shipyard, Prop G and Prop F.

Major City politicians; Gavin Newsom, Sophie Maxwell (District 10 Supervisor), San Francisco's Redevelopment Agency, and other governmental bodies supported Proposition G- which endorsed the Lennar Corporation's promise to build 10,000 luxury condos, commercial venues, and parks on the Shipyard.

The other Proposition (Prop F) substantially addressed the issue of affordable housing for the low to moderate income community members of Bayview Hunters Point. Spearheaded by Supervisor Daly and supported by POWER and other community organizations, Proposition F advocated organized to raise awareness and gather over 11,000 signatures to support.

Daly and others contend that Proposition G won because of the Lennar Corporation's 5.5 million dollar advertising budget, breaking San Francisco's city funding records for a local measure.

The Lennar Corporation bought themselves an win!

Lennar hires an armed security guard to intimidate the community

WHY SHOULD LENNAR HAVE A DIFFERENT SET OF RULES?

JOIN US TO LET THEM KNOW:
IF YOU WANT TO DO BUSINESS IN THIS CITY, YOU MUST ABIDE BY THE RULES.

RULE #1: NO GUNS ALLOWED.
RULE #2: USING RACISM AND HATRED IS OUTDATED.

On February 18, Lennar sent an armed operative to a town hall meeting hosted by the Stop Lennar Action Movement (SLAM), featuring Wilma Subra, a world renowned scientist who was brought to San Francisco by the Environmental Protection Agency. The purpose of the meeting was for Dr. Subra to address the upcoming Environmental Impact Report for the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard.

The person in question carried a loaded firearm into an informational community meeting, packed with more than 200 children, teachers, community members, candidates for District 10 Supervisor, representatives of the EPA, families, and activists from across San Francisco. A former police officer, the man had NO permit to carry the weapon, signed in under a false name, was taking pictures of the crowd, and refused to provide correct information.

THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. No matter what your position, EVERYONE should be allowed to organize without fear of intimidation. In a community inundated by gun violence, Lennar’s actions were inexcusable.

What’s worse is that Lennar has used local media outlets not to APOLOGIZE, but to try and justify their actions. Using racism and hatred, Lennar is saying that the white officer was afraid. What exactly was he afraid of? Articles containing the fear driven words “black muslims” are attempting to spin the story away from Lennar’s irresponsible actions.

The San Francisco Examiner's interview of the armed "security" guard:

POWER Speaks up on Proposition F

POWER (people organized to win employment rights) has been spreading the word about the
lies of the Lennar Corporation for three years.

POWER has been working with the community of Bayview to bring the truth about the Redevelopment plans.

The community of Bayview Hunters Point deserves better. Bayview deserves jobs, parks and housing- but does not deserve to be poisoned in the process of hasty development by a dirty developer! Now is the time to join the Bayview Hunters Point community in the fight against environmental racism. By urging the Board of Supervisors to reject the Environmental Impact Report , we stand together for the future of Bayview we deserve!
